There’s been a lot of talk about it recently and so I thought I’d put my thinking forward on the subject – Jonjo Shelvey and a World Cup call.

Before we signed the midfielder, I’d watched him quite a bit for the likes of Liverpool and Swansea. I’m sure most of you had too and I felt that, though a decent player, he wasn’t consistent enough to truly demonstrate the talent he has.

For sure, he could ping a nice ball but then he`d throw in rash challenges or give up possession easily, so I was never really sure whether he`d be a hit when he rocked up at St. James`.

However, since signing for us I think we’ve seen the best of him in the middle of the park and he certainly looks a more-rounded individual in Black and White.

I’m sure Rafa has had his part to play in that but we’ve also got to note he’s at an age where he’s going to be at his strongest; it makes sense that he is playing well.

So, the World Cup. Perhaps I’m going to sound biased but I’d absolutely take him this summer. We’ve a number of midfielders that can pass the ball but few of them – from a deep lying area – take the risks that Jonjo does.

It’s all well and good knocking it around from side to side but England need to be more direct and carry thrust going forwards when you consider our pace in the final third and the finishing ability the likes of Kane has.

From further back, I don’t think there’s many in this country that can use the ball as well as Shelvey and so, without doubt, I’d take him to Russia. Get him on the plane, Gareth!

Agree with me? Let me know.
