Rafa Benitez has announced that Jonjo Shelvey will miss the premier league game tomorrow night at Anfield where we face Liverpool.

The enforced absence of one of our pivotal players opens the door for another it would seem.

That man should be Mikel Merino although at various stages this season where it looks like he’s the obvious choice to come in we’ve seen the likes of Mo Diame or Isaac Hayden slot in instead.

The times where Merino has played, he’s looked like he has the potential to be a real star player with an obvious football brain to go with his range of passing and speed of touch or turn.

With a back complaint being reported in recent weeks, it makes you wonder if it’s that, that has kept him away from the line up or there was some sort of truth with stories in the January transfer window rumours of him attracting interest from Spain.

However long Shelvey is out for, I reckon this is a big chance for Merino to stake a claim in the side and it will be taken if Rafa picks him. Surely we wont go to Liverpool and pack the defence with some creativity needed to attack the other end.
