Better late than never: Newcastle look to sign £15.3m-rated striker 4 years later than planned – report

|

Newcastle could sign Sporting Lisbon striker Bas Dost, according to a report in O Jogo.

The Dutch forward could finally be on his way to St James’ Park, four years after the club almost signed him. In 2015 the Mirror reported the Magpies were close to signing the striker when he was playing for Wolfsburg.

The O Jogo report claims Newcastle are interested and the Portuguese club are willing to listen to offers for the 30-year-old. However, Spanish club Sevilla are also keen on the former Netherlands international.

Last season, Dost scored 15 goals and provided one assist in 22 league games. However, he has netted a total of 218 from 405 matches in club football.

Transfermarkt value the forward at £15.3million but it is believed Sporting may allow him to leave the Estadio Jose Alvalade for as little as £10m, as they attempt to reduce their wage bill. He has two years remaining on his current contract.

Newcastle are looking to fill the Salomon Rondon sized hole in the Magpies attack following the Venezuelan’s return to West Brom.

Dost has a proven track record of scoring goals, and a relatively cheap asking price could make him an attractive proposition for the Newcastle hierarchy.
