Benitez uncertainty sees manager with 1.48ppg average linked with Newcastle job – report

Hope of seeing Rafa Benitez stand in the St James’ Park dugout come August remains strong around Tyneside, but the lack of a new deal has led Italian outlets to suggest the Spaniard may not be in charge next season.

Following his departure from AC Milan, Calciomercato have suggested Newcastle are one of the sides currently in line to offer Gennaro Gattuso another shot at management.

The Italian, born in Corigliano Calabro, had his contract with the Rossoneri mutually terminated on Tuesday, after he failed to guide the Serie A sleeping giant back into the Champions League by a single point.

Calciomercato also add that Gattuso would be very tempted to try his hand working outside Italy now that he is unattached, and claim it is a sort of priority for the future.

AS Monaco are another side who could look to recruit Gattuso, depending on their decision to retain or release Leonardo Jardim, but the serious interest in the manager’s services comes from Sampdoria.

I Blucerchiati’s owner Massimo Ferrero is thought to be keen on bringing the former Milan midfielder to the Stadio Luigi Ferraris, but the 41-year-old first wants to know if the club will be sold or not.

Whoever takes on Gattuso as their next manager will be adding a head coach who holds a career 1.48 points-per-game average, including a 1.73 run with AC in what was his longest stretch in one position.

This is not the first time we have been linked with Gattuso either, as La Gazzetta dello Sport suggested last month that super agent Jorge Mendes had met with the Italian for dinner in Milan, and discussed the Magpies as his name had entered the list of potential alternatives to Benitez.
