Benitez is right: Ashley deserves ultimatum that could cost Newcastle dearly – opinion

|

Rafael Benitez has been a very patient man, but you cannot blame him for his latest ultimatum. According to the Telegraph, the Spaniard will leave Newcastle this summer unless he’s given two new signings in January – and that’s an objective that, at present, is looking unlikely.

The Magpies have yet to bring in a single player so far this January, with Mike Ashley clearly not providing the level of support that is needed for a top Premier League outfit to survive.

Let’s not forget how lucky we are to have Benitez. This is a manager that has won it all over the years, and he’s managed some incredible teams like Napoli, Liverpool and Real Madrid. Now, Newcastle are no charity case, but you can bet that a top European side would be in for him if he was out of a job, yet he’s chosen to remain at St James’ Park for the last few years.

How does the club’s owner reward him? Well, so far, he’s been rewarded with a whole lot of nothing. With no major signings and an owner that seems disinterested in the club, Benitez has done all he can.

In truth, the manager deserves incredible credit for keeping Newcastle in the Premier League last season, and he’ll deserve even more if he manages to repeat that feat this term.

Nothing seems to be changing at the club, and eventually, enough has to be enough. There’s no point him staying around if he’s not going to get the backing that he deserves.
