As we head off to the first of the international breaks this season, Newcastle find themselves in the perilous position of having picked up just one point from the first twelve available.
The first four games have yielded three defeats and a draw, although perhaps we should point out that three of those games have been against sides who are expected to make a challenge for the Premier League title, Tottenham Hotspur, Chelsea and Manchester City.
But, it should be pointed out that in three of those games Newcastle have been beaten by the odd goal in three.
Against Manchester City, on Saturday, the side put in the effort needed to convince the critics that we are able to turn the corner, prompting Rafael Benitez to remark to BBC Sport.
“I am really pleased with the effort, mentality and team spirit. We were in the game for a while. We gave the ball away or the first and the second was a great goal.
“It is the same situation for us, we have to improve on the ball and we would have more chances against these teams.”
But, despite our perilous position in the table, the support, from the fans hasn’t wavered, they flocked to see their side against Nottingham Forest in midweek and also to the Etihad Stadium for the City clash, prompting Rafael to further add:
“I am pleased to see the support of the fans and the way players were working. That is the main thing to have everyone together.”
And as for sitting third from bottom in the Premier League table, Rafael doesn’t seem too perturbed, finishing with:
“We cannot be watching the table, it is too early. The main thing is the performance. We are not too far away, as soon as you start with a couple of victories you can go up.”
Exactly, believe in Rafael, he knows what he is doing.
