In the wake of Sir Bobby and Kenny Dalglish issuing their tuppence worth on the job vacancy at SJP, former boss Jim Smith has also chipped in with a few standard soundbites on the situation. Expect comments from Ossie, Keegan, Souness and Roeder imminently. Smith said:
“I’m very surprised at what they’ve done. But you’ve only got to look at their record in the period of time since I was there to see Newcastle are up there at the top of the pile when it comes to dismissing managers quickly. I’d say they’re in the top two for that. It’s always pressure from the fans that does it.
It’s unbelievable pressure. It was definitely the biggest club, in terms of fans’ expectations, that I ever managed.
It’s all about getting the right team and building it over a period of time. Keegan had five years, but then he left because he felt he had taken them as far as could be done.
I’ve been trying to get hold of Harry because I’m in Spain and he’s due to come over to me for a couple of days next week. This might change that! But I don’t know whether he’d want to swap what he’s got at Portsmouth for that. And Shearer’s not got any experience. He’s not stupid . . . he’ll know this is not the right time for him to take a job like that.’
