It’s been a tough few weeks for Newcastle. We lost again over the weekend to Chelsea, pushing us back into the relegation zone, and now we’ve got another difficult game against Blackburn Rovers to contend with.

On paper, of course, we should beat them, but the reality is that we failed in that quest last time out, hence the fact that we’re now partaking in a replay against the Championship outfit.

Our job of beating them, though, has been made more difficult by some recent news that Rafael Benitez has confirmed. The boss has stated that his injury issues are still pretty lengthy, with the same players out for this game as were missing against Chelsea.

That means that Jonjo Shelvey, Mo Diame and Paul Dummett – among others – are all out of the game. If we were playing well, this wouldn’t be a huge issue, but given our poor form, that puts us in a tough spot.

A loss against Blackburn would mean that our team morale – that’s clearly already low – would be even worse, and we’ve got a relegation battle on our hands, let’s not forget – and so that’s not what we need.

A big win against Blackburn could serve as a catalyst as we look to build to a strong end to the season. The chances of that happening, given our injury list, are looking low.

Still, we’re hopeful of a good result, as there were some positives to take from our combative performance against Chelsea.
