Christian Atsu has been away with Ghana on international duty in preparation for their forthcoming World Cup qualifiers.

Reports this week saw the 25 year old winger subject to conflicting stories over his fitness level with injury the main talking point.

Rafa Benitez mentioned in his press conference the other day about injuries to some of our players and when specifically talking of Atsu just basically said that he had discomfort in his knee and that he was being managed.

He insinuated that there was no real issue with Atsu and it would be managed on a weekly basis like some of the other players we’ve had with similar concerns.

Reports elsewhere though give a slightly different picture with the origination of these claims unclear although all the papers have picked it up as gospel.

The likes of The Chronicle and Northern Echo, The Sun etc report that Atsu has had injections in his knee early on in the season in order to try to delay an operation that may be needed. An operation that would rule him our for around three months.

Like Jamaal Lascelles last season who was carrying an injury, if it impacts a player’s game then an operation shouldn’t be delayed in any way as it could affect many aspects of their career and with January creeping closer and Mike Ashley surely not wanting to withhold the transfer cash again, the ability to replace should be there soon.

I guess this will be an ongoing analysis from here on in, unless the injury somehow sorts itself out.
