Ashley tipped to offer Benitez contract, loads of fans react: ‘Is this like Football Manager’

|

Loads of Newcastle supporters have been reacting on social media after the Shields Gazette claimed owner Mike Ashley is ready to offer Rafa Benitez a new contract.

The pair have now been locked in negotiations for a week, having sat down with one another last Thursday following the climax of the Premier League season, where the Spaniard guided us to a 13th place finish and a win over would-be champions Manchester City.

His deal on Tyneside comes to an end of June 30, however, and the pair were keen to wrap things up swiftly so that they can go about their respective business this summer as soon as possible.

But what has proved difficult is that Benitez is intent on Ashley sanctioning modifications to the club’s transfer policy that would give the gaffer greater control over how we spend the rumoured £100million war chest plus sales, which will be spread over the next four windows.

The Shields Gazette, however, claim that Ashley is ‘on standby to meet Benitez again to shake hands on a deal’, providing the Spaniard and Lee Charnley can reach an agreement, as our Managing Director is the one whom the boss has been negotiating with for the past few weeks.

The Guardian, though, have reported somewhat otherwise, as they believe Benitez will demand Ashley meets him face-to-face again and gives him written guarantees that his promises will be fulfilled before he is willing to put pen to paper on a new contract.

So when the Shields Gazette’s piece was shared on Reddit, here’s how some United supporters reacted…
