Newcastle United owner Mike Ashley has given gaffer Alan Shearer a four-point plan which the 38-year-old ex-player must put into play if the club are to be given any money for rebuilding.

1. Sell at least 12 players to raise £30m in transfer income with the biggest assets including Oba Martins, Fabricio Coloccini and Sebastien Bassong first out of the door.

2. Halve the wage bill – cutting from its current crippling level of £74m, the fifth-highest in the Premier League, with 15 stars on more than £50,000 a week.

3. Save £ 10m a year by getting rid out-of-contract stars Michael Owen and Mark Viduka.

4. Axe up to 100 club employees as income plunges by an estimated £50m next season.

Alan Shearer is yet to respond to these demands, but is expected to comply and take charge of club affairs from as early as the 1st of next month.
