Anthony Gordon Chase Heats Up

|

By now it’s no secret that Newcastle have entered formal talks with [what’s left of] Everton over a deal for their young attacking midfielder, Anthony Gordon.

Reports yesterday began to appear online that the two clubs were far apart on their valuation with Newcastle offering £25m plus a further £15m in add-ons, but Everton value Gordon closer to £60m as mentioned by Craig Hope on his YouTube channel after the Southampton game.

Speculation has now intensified that deal is close with Anthony Gordon absent from training this morning at their Finch Farm training ground. This is according to Sky Sports.

Newcastle fans are still very much divided on whether Gordon would be a good signing, with the majority seemingly dead against the move due to his seemingly poor attitude and his habit of diving (a tactic he deployed against Newcastle to varying degrees of success last season).

There are others, however, who trust Eddie Howe’s judgement. They believe that if he truly was as disruptive or petulant as he seems, Howe wouldn’t give him the time of day, but the fact that he’s so keen to land him suggests that Howe feels he can work with Gordon.

We already know that Howe can get the best out of players, and we’ve seen that there is definitely a good player in Gordon, so the combination could prove fruitful for Newcastle.

Personally, I’m on the fence. I think Anthony Gordon believes his own hype after a string of good performances last season, but the reality is he’s never hit those heights since and can’t even get into an Everton team who are in the bottom three. On the flip side, he’s only 21 and has a lot to learn and Howe is the best man to guide him.

There are also rumours on Twitter that there has been a falling out between Gordon and Conor Coady which has resulted in Gordon demanding a move, but so far there are no credible sources to cite on that one.

However, all signs definitely seem to be pointing towards Anthony Gordon becoming a Newcastle player before Tuesday’s transfer deadline whether fans like him or not.
