Alan Pardew summed up the wonder strike from Papiss Cisse in a glowing praise not too dissimilar to another number 9 we used to have.

“As soon as he hit it, you sensed it was in – it was one of those moments, almost an Alan Shearer moment!

It was a great lift for him because he`s played so well without getting his reward. However, he gets all kinds of goals just as Alan did, he gets the tap ins and the odd wonder goal.

That was a real special one today”.

Pardew was speaking after Cisse picked up a long 60 yard punt from goalkeeping stand in, Rob Elliot and hit an unstoppable 25 yard half volley which arrowed into the net via the underside of the Southampton bar.

Hopefully, this is the start of the instinctive Cisse of last season, which will put us in good fettle for the remainder of this campaign, which may yet herald some silverware.

You never know.
