Shola Ameobi’s decision to sanction Elias Sorensen’s move to Carlisle United could come back to haunt the Newcastle loan manager, after Cheltenham Town boss Michael Duff confirmed the Robins were interested in singing the Denmark youth international, as quoted by Gloucestershire Live.
Duff has been speaking ahead of his side’s League Two encounter with Carlisle, which could see Sorensen make his first start in the fourth-tier after making his Cumbrians debut in the second-half of their defeat to Mansfield at the weekend.
In a parallel universe, Sorensen could have been lining up for Cheltenham on Tuesday night instead, as the Whaddon Road natives made efforts to land the prolific Under 23s Toon product on loan in January and again in the summer, but saw their advances rebuffed.
“They have brought in the young lad Sorensen from Newcastle, a very good player and someone we were interested in both last January and in the summer,” Duff confirmed.
“He went away with the first-team [for the pre-season tour of Asia].
“I think he might come into the team, and he’ll give them good legs and a real goal threat.”
It may have been a wiser decision from Ameobi to sanction a move to Whaddon Road, though, as the Robins lost Mohamed Eisa to Bristol City earlier in the summer, and parted ways with a third of their goals in selling the Sudan-born forward.
Eisa netted 23 of Cheltenham’s 67 goals in League Two last season, which was the second-most of anyone in the division, and the fifth-highest goal contribution rate.
Carlisle, meanwhile, scored five fewer goals overall than Cheltenham, but retained leading goalscorer Hallam Hope, who netted 14 times in 40 games in a side that featured 16 different scorers.
