‘A modern incarnation of Alan Shearer’ – These Newcastle fans discuss best number 9

|

Lots of Newcastle fans on Twitter have discussed who has been the best number 9 for the club this decade.

The Chronicle’s dedicated Newcastle United Twitter page asked its followers who their favourite number 9 of the decade was, to which there was a pretty varied response.

With quality players such as Andy Cole, Les Ferdinand, Kevin Keegan and of course Alan Shearer wearing the jersey in the past, it has quite a reputation as an important number to have on Tyneside.

This decade we have seen a big variety of players wear the shirt. It started with Andy Carroll – now repping the number seven jersey – before Papiss Cisse held it for four seasons, followed by Dwight Gayle, Salomon Rondon and now Joelinton.

Who has been Newcastle's best number 9 this decade?

Papiss Cisse

Andy Carroll

Salomon Rondon

Dwight Gayle

Carroll, Cisse and Rondon appeared to be the front runners on Twitter, and even Demba Ba got a shout, despite never wearing the 9 shirt for the Magpies.

But who is really the deserved winner?

Well, let’s compare the stats.

Andy Carroll has scored 33 times in 100 appearances for the Toon, Papiss Cisse scored 44 times in 131 games, Dwight Gayle managed to bag 29 times in 76 appearances, Salomon Rondon managed 12 in 32 and finally, Joelinton has got 1 in 17.

That doesn’t really make it much easier, apart from rule Joelinton out of the mix. The answer is obviously subjective, however, Cisse has scored the most amount of times and scored them all during a time when they were in the Premier League.
