£22.5m-rated player in Newcastle’s sights despite managerial issues – report

|

Newcastle may be managerless by the end of the week but Rafa Benitez leaving has not stopped the club from trying to sign new players, according to a report in The Daily Star.

The report suggests the Newcastle board have been working on bringing Nice midfielder, Allan Saint-Maximin to St James’ Park and a deal could be close.

The club signing players with no manager would back up a Tweet by Bleacher Report’s Dean Jones, in which he claims any new manager will not have control over transfers.

Saint-Maximin can play on either wing and last season scored six and assisted five in his 34 league appearances, while he was also was part of the Nice team that finished seventh in Ligue 1 last term.

The 22-year-old is valued at £22.5 million on Transfermarkt and has been capped by the France U21 team. The report suggests Newcastle are prepared to pay £22 million for the midfielder, however, the French side value their player at £27 million.

The report also suggests Saint-Maximin would welcome a move, having expressed a desire to leave Nice earlier this year. Benitez’s last contract offer from the club included a non-negotiable £50 million transfer fund, if this deal is completed that would be half of that kitty spent on one player.
